Why Dogs:
Well, about 10 years ago I was charmed by a mid-19th century dog portrait in oil and gilded frame; competent work that was honest, direct and sort of funny and serious. Although the picture was out of my price range I wasn't able to forget it, so I finally made one in collage (the poodle). It was so pleasing to make and to see that I made another and another and another.
Dogs just seem to bring out our humanity and of course, they make us laugh. Artistically they offer up so many challenges from the foreshortening of their snouts to the expression of their personalities and breeds.
So what you're seeing is about a year's work, only now I seem to want my dogs to move and growl, bark, climb, race. We'll see.
My Background
Art has been an intregral part of my life since I was very small. I currently work in collage and use paint (acrylic, tempura, gouache) for the backgrounds and some highlights. This interplay between paint and paper lends richness to the work and produces a balance between the more energetic and quieter spaces in the work. I adore collage because it is such an active and tactile medium.
